Tees Community Power Company: the UK’s most advanced privately funded SMR deployment
Our project in Teesside is more than just a clean energy initiative. It’s a blueprint for the future of nuclear energy in the UK. By combining proven technology, a strategic location and a community-focused approach, CNP is setting the standard for private-sector-led energy solutions.
CNP will deploy four Westinghouse AP300®™ SMRs, delivering 1.3GW of electricity or 3GW of heat to adjacent industrial and grid customers. Crucially, it is led by one of the UK’s most experienced nuclear development teams with unmatched site licence, regulatory and first-of-a-kind delivery expertise.
The fully remediated site, existing 400kV grid access, and strong political support underpin a credible four-year path to licensing and the first of 80 years of operational revenues in 2035.
Execution capability, not aspiration, defines the investment case.
Snapshot of project
Capacity: ~1.3GW of energy across four units
Location: Teesside, North East England
Technology: Westinghouse AP300®™ SMRs
Project type: Privately funded SMR deployment
Grid connectivity: Direct access to 400kV transmission lines
Community Nuclear Power’s first SMR project is planned at the Green Lizard Group estate, within an established industrial cluster on the north bank of the River Tees. The project is designed to supply clean, reliable baseload power to support long‑term industrial growth and inward investment in the Tees Valley.
The project is fully privately funded, with no cost to UK taxpayers, and structured to attract long‑term institutional capital seeking stable, infrastructure‑style returns.
CNP is working with Westinghouse to deploy four AP300®™ reactors, using proven nuclear technology adapted into a modular design to reduce construction risk, improve cost certainty, and enable repeatable future deployment.
At full build‑out, the project is expected to generate around 1.3GW of electricity, aligned with demand from the planned low‑carbon energy and chemicals hub at the Green Lizard Group estate. Co‑location with energy‑intensive users supports long‑term offtake and strong revenue visibility.
As a first‑of‑a‑kind project, Tees Community Power Company is intended to establish a scalable SMR delivery model for the UK, reducing cost and risk for future projects while supporting regional economic growth and the UK nuclear supply chain.
Proven technology:
Deployment of four Westinghouse AP300®™ SMRs, based on the operational AP1000®™ design, ensuring low-risk, reliable, and scalable energy production.
The four reactors will generate 1.3GW of clean electricity or 3GW of thermal energy, providing dependable power suitable for homes, industries, and sustainable technologies.
Strategic location:
Located on remediated land on Teesside, with excellent access to grid infrastructure, transport links, and adjacent energy-intensive industries.
Economic and community benefits:
Creation of local jobs, skills training, and long-term economic opportunities for the Teesside region.
Community-first approach ensures local stakeholders directly benefit from the project’s success.
Energy security and scalability:
Contribution to closing the UK’s 100GW clean energy gap, providing always-on, low-carbon power to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
TCPC is the first step in CNP’s ambition to deploy SMRs across multiple UK sites, creating a scalable model for clean energy delivery.
Powering a cleaner, more secure future through innovation.
